Keep the Heat Out, Not the Security

As temperatures rise, local policing teams are reminding residents to remain vigilant and ensure their homes are secure.

Hot weather often leads to doors and windows being left open for ventilation, creating opportunities for opportunist burglars. Police traditionally see an increase in insecure-door and insecure-window burglaries during warmer months, particularly when properties are left unattended or windows are left open overnight.

To help protect your home:

Always lock doors and accessible windows when leaving your property, even for a short time.

If you need ventilation, use window restrictors or only open windows that cannot be accessed from outside.

Keep valuables, keys and vehicle keys out of sight and away from doors and windows.

Ensure gardens are secure and avoid leaving ladders or tools outside, as these can assist offenders in gaining entry.

Consider using CCTV, alarms or smart security devices to help deter criminal activity.

If you see suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, report it to police. In an emergency, always call 999.
